We are currently working on a regeneration scheme for Spindles shopping centre in Oldham town centre. The project involves the creation of a new office space for Oldham Council as well as spaces for coworking, events, shopping, eating and drinking.
The concept of contrast is prevalent in both the workplace and public space. This allows us to embrace the existing structure whilst introducing new materials and finishes, juxtaposing raw industrial materials with soft, warm fabrics to create a welcoming environment.
The concept of a ‘modern market’ is clear through the public space, stemming from Oldham’s past as a historical market town. A market is not only a place for trading but historically also a place of socialising and people coming together at the centre of the community, creating a fusion of cultures. We embraced this in the design, also taking other nods from Oldham’s history such as its 19th century red brick terraces and surrounding countryside as inspiration for the colour palette.
The redevelopment of Spindles shopping centre has been implemented after listening to the requests of the local community. Ideas from residents, businesses and market traders through recent consultations are to shape the regeneration in order to help change the future of the building and support the local economy.
